In this paper, we overview the PLACE server (Pervasive Location-Aware Computing Environments); a scalable location-aware database server developed at Purdue University. The PLACE server extends data streaming management systems to support location-aware environments. Location-aware environments are characterized by the large number of continuous spatio-temporal queries and the infinite nature of spatio-temporal data streams. The PLACE server employs spatio-temporal query operators that support a wide variety of continuous spatio-temporal queries. In addition, the PLACE server is equipped with scalable operators that provide shared execution among multiple continuous spatiotemporal queries. To cope with intervals of high workload of data objects and/or continuous queries, the PLACE server utilizes object and query load shedding techniques to support a larger number of continuous queries with approximate answers.
